Հանդեսի նպատակն էր հայ ընթերցողներին լսելի դարձնել եկեղեցու ձայնը. «Ամեն ողջամիտ ընթերցող պէտք է ընդունի որ բառեր ու դարձուածներ ուսուցանել չէ մի կրօնաթերթի նպատակ, այլ կրօնի եւ բարեպաշտութեան զգացումն զարթուցանել եւ արծարծել ի հոգիս մարդկան...» (տե'ս «Հայ-եկեղեցի», 1901, # 11): Հանդեսը ստեղծվել է «Հրամանաւ Տեառն Տեառն Մկրտչի Սրբազնագոյն Կաթողիկոսի Ամենայն Հայոց»:
